Local Jazz

There was a vibrant post-war Big Band & Jazz Scene in NZ, not the least caused by the American troops stationed here during the Pacific War. This continued, especially around American musicians such as Drummer/Percussionist Bud Jones, employed by the NZSO and who formed Big Bands ‘on the side’.

When ‘Popular’ and ‘Jazz’ music courses started in NZ Universities in the late 1970’s, it created, with the guidance of the already schooled professional musicians, a viable platform for young players to experiment and record. SDL released and continues to release a number of these sessions, some NZ Music Award winners amoungst them.

Jazz on SDL Music

Supporting Local Jazz has always been part of SDL’s ethos.

This stems from NH’s active part in the local Jazz scene and learning a lot of Jazz Standards when the Jazz Real Book ruled.
