SDL Music Album of the Month: “Ridin’ on Trains” Red McKelvie

Bertram John McKelvie, Red to his musician mates and fans, passed away in the town of Geraldine on April 23, 2022. He was a New Zealand treasure, such an unassuming, modest, humble monster musician. Not that you’d know it if you passed him in the street or on the golf course in his knitted jumper and towelling bucket hat.

But musicians knew. We could hear it. Some of us were lucky enough to share stages with him night after night and hear those magical tones he pulled from whatever instrument he strapped on. Those long fingers would dance over the strings or buttons with unabashed enthusiasm. It was at times otherworldly. He’d just shrug it off.

The songs herein tell you everything you need to know about Red McKelvie. They are rich in detail of a life well lived. We are lucky to have them. There is more to come as Red recorded more of his original songs in 2016 – we are working on having these released – will keep you posted.

A memorial service is being held in Auckland on Sunday 8th May at The Maritime Room, Princes Wharf, Viaduct Harbour from 3 - 7pm.
